If you buy and sell in the 21st century, chances are you’ve heard of PayPal. One of the world’s largest internet payment systems, PayPal supports online money transfers and processes credit card payments 💳  with full security and privacy. 🔒 This makes it super safe and convenient for shoppers, and also convenient for merchants like you. 

This article covers how to integrate with the legacy product PayPal Payments Standard, which you can use with any PayPal account. If you want to accept PayPal payments through your store, we highly recommend using PayPal Express instead.

Configuring PayPal Standard With Volusion

To get started, you need your primary PayPal email address. To find it:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Go to Profile > Add or Edit Email. If you see more than one email address, find the one with the status of Primary – you must use this one with Volusion as errors may occur otherwise.
  3. Next, go to Settings > Payment in your Volusion Admin Area.
  4. Click on the More Payment Types tab, select PayPal, and select Standard Payments.
  5. In the PayPal Email Address field, enter the primary email address for your PayPal account.
  6. Click Save.

Now your customers will be able to choose PayPal as a payment option during checkout. Once your customers have chosen this option and have completed their order, they will be redirected to PayPal.com to complete payment for their purchase.

Receiving Payment Via PayPal

Once an order has been submitted to your store with PayPal as the selected payment option, the order payment status will be marked as Awaiting Payment. Once notification of payment is received from PayPal (via Instant Payment Notification, or IPN), the order status will change to Processing, and you will see the PayPal payment details in the Payment Log. Note that due to the nature of PayPal's basic service, you cannot directly collect payment from your customers via PayPal within your Volusion Admin Area.

Just as with online auctions, it is up to your customers to follow through and submit payment for their orders to your PayPal account. We highly recommend that you check your PayPal account to verify payment before shipping orders to customers who have chosen to submit payment via PayPal.

Note that the Receive option within an order's details page will be inoperable for orders that have been paid for with PayPal.

Additional Information

When you use PayPal Standard with your store, you cannot use the Void or Credit functions of the software. If you need to credit or void a customer’s account, you need to do so through PayPal directly.
