When it comes to online checkout, faster and easier is almost always better. The more simple and streamlined the process, the higher the sales (and the fewer abandoned carts!). This is the beauty of Volusion’s PayPal Express Checkout integration.

Besides being efficient, PayPal Express Checkout is flexible and customizable. You can use it with six different currencies: USD, AUD, GBP, EUR, CAD or JPY. And you can customize the pages with your store logo and colors, for a seamless brand experience. 🙌

Integrating PayPal Express Checkout With Volusion

Before you can integrate PayPal Express Checkout with your Volusion store, you'll need a PayPal business account. If you don't have one yet, you can sign up right from your Admin Area!

  1. Go to Settings > Payment in your Admin Area and select the More Payment Types tab.
  2. Select the PayPal checkbox option, then click Connect Account.
  3. Use the PayPal modal to log in to your existing PayPal business account credentials. If you don't have a business account, enter the email address you'd like to use, then follow PayPal's steps to create an account.

And that's it. Really! 😤

Once you tell us which PayPal business account you want to use, Volusion's integration does the heavy lifting. In just a few short seconds, your store is ready to accept payments using PayPal Express Checkout. Easy, right? 👍

Creating a PayPal Business Account

If you don't have a PayPal business account yet, you can either upgrade an existing PayPal personal account or create an entirely new account for your business. Be sure to verify your email address once you've created the account; until you've done so, you won't be able to complete the integration process. Once you see the green "Confirmed" text in the PayPal Express Checkout area of your Volusion store, you're good to go! 👌

Note: If you already have a business account that you use for a different platform, you'll need to create a new business account to integrate specifically with Volusion.

Seeing something different in your store?

If your Admin Area's PayPal Express Checkout section is different from the description above, you may be using an outdated version of our integration. In order to offer the best checkout experience for your customers, we strongly recommend updating to the current version. You can do that by clicking the blue Upgrade Account button right below your current credentials.

If you see an option for PayPal Standard, it's because you enabled that payment method at some point in the past. Since Express Checkout offers everything PayPal Standard does (and more!), we'll be discontinuing the ability to use the Standard method in the near future. So if you haven't jumped on the PayPal Express Checkout train yet, now's the time! ⏳

How It Works For Your Customers

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the PayPal Express Checkout process is quick and easy for your customers. Let's break it down...

Step 1: Choosing PayPal

From the shopping cart page, the customer can select either PayPal Checkout or PayPal Credit. (If your store doesn’t allow anonymous checkouts, the customer will be prompted to log in to their store account first.)

Once the PayPal Express modal appears, the customer will log in to their PayPal account. If they don't have a PayPal account, the customer can check out as a guest by clicking Pay with Debit or Credit Card. PayPal provides the opportunity to create an account later on.

Note: Customers using PayPal Express Checkout for the first time will need to agree to PayPal's Terms and Conditions before proceeding. ✅

Step 2: Confirming Order Details

Within the PayPal Express Checkout modal, the customer will confirm their Shipping Address and preferred Payment Method. If the customer selects This is a Gift, they'll be prompted to enter any relevant gift information. Once the customer has verified that all order information is correct, they can click Continue to complete the checkout process.

Step 3: Placing the Order

The PayPal Express checkout modal will disappear, and the customer will be redirected back to your store’s checkout page. The customer’s address and payment info from PayPal will automatically populate on your checkout page. In the Payment section, the customer will see a PayPal logo indicating their chosen payment method.

Once the customer selects their preferred shipping option, all they need to do is click Place Order, and voilà! The customer's payment will be made to your PayPal business account, and they’ll receive an Order Confirmation email from your store.

Alternate Path: Choosing PayPal from the Checkout Page

Just between us, customers have a tendency to change their minds. 😉

Let's say a customer initially clicks Proceed to Checkout from the shopping cart page, but somewhere in the middle of entering details on the checkout page, they want to use PayPal Express Checkout instead. Not a problem! The customer can always select the PayPal option from the Payment section of the checkout page, then choose PayPal Checkout or PayPal Credit

The reverse is true, too: if a customer decides not to use PayPal after all, they can go to the Payment section to select an alternate payment method.

PayPal as Default Payment Method

⚠️ By default, stores using PayPal Express will automatically show PayPal as the default selected Payment Method at checkout:

If you'd prefer not to have PayPal selected by default, you can disable that setting by doing the following:

  1. Go to Settings > Payment > More Payment Types.
  2. In the Express Checkout section, click Alternative Settings.
  3. Deselect PayPal Express Selected By Default.
  4. Click Save.

Offering PayPal Credit

By default, the PayPal Express Checkout integration includes an option for customers to use PayPal Credit. The button for this option appears right below the PayPal Checkout button:

PayPal Credit simply gives your US-based customers the ability to pay for their order over a longer period of time. Regardless of whether a customer chooses PayPal Checkout or PayPal Credit, you'll receive the full funds for the sale up front. PayPal provides the full amount to the merchant, then allows the customer to make payments toward their PayPal balance, just like a credit card.

While it may not make a difference to you as a merchant, this option can be extremely appealing to customers, particularly if you sell higher cost items like jewelry and electronics. 💍 It may even mean the difference between a sale and an abandoned cart!

If you aren't sure you want to offer the PayPal Credit option to your customers, you can hide it on your storefront:

  1. Go to Settings > Payment > More Payment Types.
  2. In the Express Checkout section, click Alternative Settings.
  3. Deselect Show PayPal Credit Button.
  4. Click Save.

Processing PayPal Express Checkout Orders

Orders placed via PayPal Express Checkout will be logged in your Admin Area, along with all your other orders. To view them, go to Orders > Process Orders.

A few special things to note about PayPal Express Checkout Orders:

  • Customer billing and shipping info for PayPal Express Checkout orders cannot be updated from the Order Details page
  • Order notes entered in PayPal or on the one-page checkout will appear in the Order Notes section
  • PayPal Express Checkout orders will show a Debit record in the Payment Log section as "Paid Via - PayPal Express"
  • You have the option to Add Offline Payment in the Payments & Credits section
  • You'll see a TransID and a button to refund the entire order, if needed (more on that below)

PayPal Delayed Capture

You also have the option to delay capturing any PayPal Express Checkout funds until you've had a chance to review the order(s). This works in a similar way to the Authorize at Sale, Capture at Shipping setting for credit card transactions.

The delayed capture setting is disabled by default, but you can enable it in your Admin Area:

  1. Go to Settings > Payment > More Payment Types.
  2. In the Express Checkout section, click Alternative Settings.
  3. Select PayPal Delayed Capture.
  4. Click Save.

Once a PayPal Express Checkout transaction has been authorized, you can:

  • Capture either a partial amount or the full amount of the authorization
  • Reauthorize for a different amount — up to 115% of the originally authorized amount, not to exceed an increase of $75 USD
  • Void the authorization, if you need to cancel the transaction

Issuing Refunds

Issuing refunds is not so fun. ☹️  But at least with PayPal Express it’s easy. 😊

For up to 30 days after the transaction, you can issue full refunds from the order details page in your Admin Area by clicking Refund in the Payment Log section. If you need to issue a partial refund, or if you need to issue a refund after 30 days, you can do so directly from your PayPal Express Checkout account.

Keep in mind that eCheck payment refunds may be delayed by PayPal. Additionally, PayPal may choose to audit a transaction, which may also result in delays. Delayed refunds will show as successful in your Volusion Admin Area, but PayPal may reach out to you directly if there are any issues with the refund.

Summary

PayPal Express Checkout gives customers the opportunity to zip through your store’s checkout process without pausing to reach for their wallets (or reconsider their purchase). And it’s even faster and more seamless than PayPal’s standard checkout procedure. Integrate PayPal Express Checkout today and see what it can do to increase checkout speed, sales, and customer satisfaction!
