Products are like people, in that they come in different shapes and sizes. 👱 👵 👧 Therefore you may have some that have unique shipping requirements and need to ship on their own. You can take care of these with some simple settings in your store.
Configuring "Ships By Itself"
To configure a product to ship alone:
In your Admin Area, go to Inventory > Products
Click the product code you want to edit
Under Advanced Info > Shipping, check the Ships by Itself option
Select the Package Type and enter the dimensions (in inches) for your product into the Length, Width, and Height fields (See below for details)
Click Save to apply this setting to your product
You can select one of several specific package types, based on your preferred shipping provider. Configuring a specific package type will cause your checkout page to only deliver shipping Live Rates for the package type and carrier selected. If the package type you will use to ship the product is not listed on this menu, leave this setting blank.
Additional Handling Indicator
Enable this option to configure the product to be eligible for additional shipping and handling charges from UPS. This option is required, depending on certain factors such as the size, weight or container used to ship the product.
Enable this option to mark the product as exceeding UPS's maximum size or weight restrictions for standard packages. This will configure the product to incur additional shipping charges from UPS based on their current rates for over-sized packages.
For more information on UPS-specific settings, see UPS: Additional Charges.
Backup Rate Users
The Ships By Itself feature only functions when using Live Rate integration. Any shipping calculations that would be calculated for a product configured to ship by itself will not be applied when using shipping methods configured to use backup shipping rates.
When a product is marked to ship by itself, the shipping costs for a product will be calculated separately from any other products in the order. This shipping cost will then be added to the overall shipping cost for the remainder of the order and presented to your customers.
For example, a customer purchases three products on a single order – one of which is marked to ship by itself. The shipping cost for the product that is set to ship by itself will be calculated based on the store's configured shipping settings. The cost of shipping the rest of the products within the order will then be calculated. These two shipping charges will then be added together and this will be the total shipping cost that will be presented to the customer on your storefront.
If a shipping method uses the Max Order Weight field, the shipping method will be excluded if multiple products in the order exceed the weight you set in the Shipping Method, regardless if a product is marked as Ships By Itself.
Regardless of a product’s shape or size, your Volusion store can accommodate its shipping needs, even if that means it has to ship by itself. Don’t worry, your product won’t be lonely for long, after it reaches the hands of its new owner. 👐
