Your store website is made up of many files. All the pictures of your products and graphics that make your site look pretty are all separate files. 📂📂📂

The easiest way to get all the files from your computer to your site is to use File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, which is available to Volusion stores with active hosting plans (that means no free trials).

To keep your images, videos and other files super safe, we use a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). 🔐

In order to utilize FTP, you’ll also need an FTP client. An FTP client is a program that connects your computer to the server where your website's files are stored, and it accesses that server by using the account information you provide.

Check out this video for instructions:

If you'd rather read about it at your own pace, continue on.

Creating an FTP Account

Before you can take advantage of your store's FTP capabilities, you'll need to create an FTP account in your MyVolusion account. You can use the FTP account's credentials to access the files that make up your site. If you've already created an FTP account, see "How to Use Your Volusion FTP (SFTP) Account" for login instructions.

Create your Volusion FTP account by logging in to MyVolusion.

  1. In your MyVolusion account, click Manage FTP under my Stores.

  2. Choose the appropriate store domain name from the drop-down list at the top of the page.

  3. Click Add to create a new FTP account.

  4. The system will automatically generate an FTP account name and password.

  5. Edit your desired username and password*, and click Save.

Note that there are character requirements for both your username and your password. Each must be at least eight characters long, and must contain at least three of the following character types:

  • uppercase letter

  • lowercase letter

  • numeral

  • special character

Setting Permissions

Below the auto-generated user name and password for FTP is a drop-down menu labeled Folder that lists every directory or sub-directory your FTP account can access. By default, most folders will be assigned both read and write access. To change access settings, select a directory from the Folder menu and assign permissions as needed.

Transferring files to your website just got a little bit easier with FTP. Knowing that it’s extra secure through Volusion’s Secure File Transfer Protocol makes it that much sweeter. 🍭

Once your account is created, you can follow the instructions outlined in "How to Use Your Volusion FTP (SFTP) Account" to log in using any standard FTP program. For troubleshooting tips, please see "How to Troubleshoot Your Volusion FTP Connection".
