Gift certificates are convenient, practical and perfect for shoppers who like to live risky and shop last minute. Read on and learn how to set them up in your store!

How to Set Up Gift Certificates

Before creating a gift certificate, you'll have to set up a few things:

  1. Go to Settings > Config Variables.
  2. Perform a search for the term "gift".
  3. Make sure Enable Gift Certificates is selected. If it isn't, select it and save.
  4. Perform a search for the term "price".
  5. Make sure Enable Price Edit is selected. If it isn't, select it and save!

Now you're ready to create your certificates! To get started:

  1. Go to Inventory > Products.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Name your gift certificate (we humbly suggest "Gift Certificate" for most cases)
  4. Give it the product code GFT. (This is case specific, meaning it must be in all caps GFT. Also, no other product in your store should have this product code!)
  5. In the Price field, enter "0.00". (The customer will specify the value of the certificate during the order process!)
  6. In the Weight field, enter "0".
  7. Under Advanced Info > Misc, select Allow Price Edit.
  8. Enter any other product details you want to include, such as an image and description.
  9. Add the product to the appropriate Category(s). You may want to create a category specifically for Gift Certificates and add it to your main navigation menu or footer, so customers can easily find it.
  10. Click Save.

The gift certificate will now appear on your storefront like any other product!

When a Customer Orders a Gift Certificate

The process for customers ordering gift certificates is as follows:

  1. A customer places the gift certificate in their shopping cart as they would any other product.
  2. The customer is asked whether they want an electronic gift certificate delivered via email or a printed one delivered by mail.
  3. Next, the customer enters their gift certificate details:
  • The certificate value
  • The number of certificates they want to order
  • Gift certificate recipient’s name
  • Gift certificate sender’s name
  • A brief message
  • delivery email address (appears for email gift certificates only)

When finished, the customer can continue shopping or proceed to checkout.

Once a gift certificate is ordered, it will be listed within the Gift Certificates table in your Admin Area.

When the order is received, you’ll process the certificate automatically from the corresponding order's details page by completing the order.

Electronic gift certificates will be issued automatically via email once you click the Order Complete button at the top right of the Order Page in Orders > Process Orders. Printed gift certificates need to be manually printed from a link on the Admin Area order details page.

How to Resend the Gift Certificate Email

If a customer needs the Gift Certificate email to be resent to the recipient, you can go to Orders > Process Orders and open the gift certificate order. Under the Print links on the order, select Gift Certificates from the Email drop-down and click Resend.

The recipient will be delivered another "You've received a Gift Certificate" email.

How Recipients Redeem Gift Certificates

To redeem a gift certificate, a recipient must log in to or create an account on your store. They do so at the following URL:

Once they do, they'll receive an option to enter the certificate code included in the email or on the print-out you created:

At that point, the gift certificate becomes store credit on their account and it automatically applies to any future purchases they make while logged in:

If they reach the checkout page and haven't yet redeemed a gift certificate, they can do so from the order summary section:

They can also do so, or check their balance at any time, from the My Account page:

Remove the Print Option

If you'd like to remove the gift certificate print option from your store, follow these steps:

  1. In your Admin Area, go to Design > Page Text.
  2. From the Category menu, select GiftCert.
  3. In article IDs 190, 192, and 194, add "<!--" to the beginning of the value and "-->" to the end. This is how you comment out content in HTML (instruct the HTML document not to display anything between the tags).
  4. Press Save.

The page text articles mentioned above should appear in the manner below.

ID # 190

<!--<b>Print Gift Certificates</b>-->

ID # 192

<!--How would you like to send your gift certificate?-->

ID # 194

<!--<b>Print:</b><ul><li type="circle">Delivered in 3-7 business days</li><li type="circle">Send multiple gift certificates to the <i>same address</i> all at once</li></ul><a href="{0}">SEND VIA PRINT</a>-->

Gift Certificate Settings

Once a gift certificate is created, you can view or modify it on the Gift Certificates page in Marketing > Gift Certificates. Here you can modify, assign or activate a gift certificate. You can also see the current balance of active certificates.
