Sure, your store’s got its staples — the goods customers clamor for all year-round. But as the seasons change, so, too, will some of your inventory, and this can be a big sales booster for your store.

Whether you want to offer holiday cards and winter hats, or bikinis and beach umbrellas, 🏖️ you’ll need to know how to set up temporary products before their peak season hits. 

Enabling Temporary Products in Your Store

To enable temporary products in your store:

  1. Go to Inventory > Products.

  2. Click the three-dot actions menu icon and select All Products Settings.

  3. Ensure that Enable Temporary Products is selected.

  4. Click Save.

Setting the Period of Availability

Once temporary products have been enabled, two fields are displayed in each product's Advanced Settings > Product Display. For each temporary product:

  1. Go to Inventory > Products and click on the required Product ID.

  2. Under Advanced Info, click the Product Display tab.

  3. Enter the first date that you want the product to be displayed in the Display Begin Date field.

  4. Enter the first date you want the product to no longer be displayed in the Display End Date field.

  5. Click Save.

You can set up temporary products as far in advance as required.

New Products

Although not all temporary products are necessarily new, you can set the New! indicator for products as described below:

  1. Go to Settings > Config Variables.

  2. Search or browse for the Config Variable Mark As New Product Period.

  3. Enter the number of days you want the product with Display Begin Dates to be marked at New. This is the number of days after the Display Begin Date.

  4. Click Save.

The product will now display the New! icon during the selected period.

Note that new products are not automatically displayed in the New Products section on the homepage. If you want them to appear in this section, you need to do the following:

  1. Go to Inventory > Products and click on the required Product ID.

  2. Under Advanced Info > Product Display, in the Feature Product on the Homepage drop-down, select Home New.

  3. Click Save.

Note that as with the other home page sections, a maximum of 5 products will be displayed in the New Products section. If you have assigned more than 5 as Home_New, five will be selected at random for display.


As seasons change, your inventory will follow suit. And change is good! Limited-time offerings create a sense of urgency and entice customers to come back to see what’s new. Let them know the easy way by adding a New! badge next to your latest and greatest goods. You’ll soon turn temporary products into long-term profits. 💲💲💲
