Managing domain names can seem complex, but it's actually a fairly simple process. Check out this guide to help you understand everything you need to know.

What's a Domain Name?

If you want people to be able to find your website easily, you must register a unique domain name where people can access it. The domain name is usually the name of your company, such as

Purchasing a Domain Name

You'll need to purchase your domain name from an outside, accredited source. (We particularly like Hover or NameCheap )

Renewing a Domain Name

It's important to renew the registration for your domain name before it expires each year. Luckily, most registrars will send you a reminder email and let you renew before time runs out.

If you choose not to renew your domain name, the name will go back on the open market, where it will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Designating Your Store's Operating Domain Name

Each Volusion store can only be configured to operate on one domain name at a time. When you buy your monthly hosting plan, the order form asks you to specify the domain name that you want to use.

This designation allows us to configure your account to operate on that domain name when you're ready to go live. It doesn't register the name. By the time you place your order, you should have already registered the name through a third-party registrar.

Changing Your Store's Operating Domain Name Designation

If you need to change your store's domain name designation at any time, see "Change Your Store's Domain Name" for details.

Assigning Volusion as Your DNS Host

After you register your domain name, there's still one important step you must take before you can operate successfully online: assigning a host to point your name to your store. Volusion serves as that host for you; you just need to let your registrar know using the following steps.

Either navigate through your registrar’s control panel to locate the DNS settings or contact them directly for assistance. There are four name servers you need to input:

If your domain registrar only provides two fields for name servers, you should enter "NS3.VOLUSION.COM" and "NS4.VOLUSION.COM". Once you've saved these settings, we'll automatically be your DNS host for your domain, but it may take some time for all locations on the internet to acknowledge this.

Be sure to take this step at least 72 hours before you want to go live, as propagation can take 24-72 hours. This TOOL allows you to check the progress of your site's propagation.

Going Live

When you're ready to switch to your domain name, take the following steps:

  1. Log in to your Admin Area.

  2. Go to Settings > Company.

  3. Change the value in the Domain Name menu from Temporary Hostname to Domain Name.

  4. Click Save.

If you've completed all previously required steps, your store is now open to the public.
