Not all businesses stay with the same owners forever. You may have hired a developer to build your site and now you’re ready to have him or her put that baby back into your hands to run. Or maybe your business has grown to the point where you’ve attracted offers for a buyout (way to go! 🙌 ). Whatever the reason for transfer of ownership, it’s simple with Volusion!

If You Are the New Store Owner...

Go to the Volusion pricing page and place a new store order. Note that the hosting plan you select must be able to accommodate the current store's product count. In the Order Comments field on the checkout page, write: "Transfer of ownership, please mirror [INSERT DOMAIN NAME]."

If You Are the Current Store Owner ...

Contact Voluson via the Intercom chat link in the bottom right hand corner of your store's dashboard, or email with the following message: "I, [OWNER'S NAME], would like to transfer ownership of [INSERT DOMAIN NAME] to [NEW OWNER'S NAME]." We’ll reply back with further instructions and details.

After the transfer is complete, it can take up to 24 hours for the system to update. During that time period, your new store may only be accessible on its temporary URL ("servertrust" address). Once the system finishes propagating any changes, the new owner can go live on the domain name.

⚠️  Good to Know: The current owner will be responsible for any monthly hosting plan fees up until the transfer is complete.

Transfer Of Store Ownership FAQs

What happens to the store's email accounts?

All email accounts and aliases hosted with Volusion for the current store will be deleted in the transfer process, so it’s a good idea for the original owner to independently archive all important emails before the new owner places the transfer order. The new owner can set up new email accounts after the transfer has been completed.

Can I keep the store's current SSL certificate?

The original store's SSL certificate cannot be transferred to the new store. However, all unlimited plans now come with an SSL! If the new owner prefers to use a branded SSL, they are welcome to purchase one from our website.

⚠️  Good To Know: Current processing time for Volusion certificates is up to 3-5 business days. Before you purchase an SSL certificate, you’ll want to make sure that the WHOIS contact information for the domain registration is updated to reflect the new ownership.

Will the store use the same domain name?

It's up to the discretion of the new owner. Keep in mind, however, if the new owner intends to operate the store under its current domain name, the original monthly hosting plan will be canceled automatically so that the data can be copied. If the new owner intends to operate the store under a different domain name, the current owner must cancel all services manually, including the hosting plan

Just reach out to us and we can instruct you further.

However, in this case, the current owner must manually cancel the hosting plan for the original domain name.

What happens to stored credit card data and unprocessed orders?

Due to PCI DSS guidelines put in place to help protect customers’ sensitive data, saved credit card info on customer accounts cannot be transferred from one store to another.

Similarly, unprocessed orders from the original store cannot be processed on the new store. For this reason, we recommend placing the current store in maintenance mode 🔧 prior to the transfer procedure so that new orders don’t come in that can’t be fully processed.

Can I take ownership of a pre-existing merchant account (Volusion Payments)?

If the current owner has a Volusion Payments account, it cannot be transferred to the new owner. The original owner must cancel their Volusion Payments Account by emailing The new owner can then apply for a separate account.

Just because your business is changing hands, doesn’t mean it has to miss a beat. Volusion’s transfer of ownership process is a smooth one. And with a few preparations made on your end — to forward any important emails to the new store and to make sure orders are fully processed before ownership is transferred — you can keep your customers shopping right along!
