If you need to create multiple child products for lots of parent products, we have an efficient solution. Our bulk import/export feature saves you from having to create the Inventory Control Grid one product at a time. And the faster you get all of those products in your store, the faster you can sell them. Read on to learn how to use it.

⚠️ First Things First

Before you can use the import/export feature to create child products in bulk, you must first create your product option categories and options. The import/export feature can come in handy for doing this, too.

Step 1: Retrieve OptionIDs

On your store's Admin Dashboard page choose Inventory > Import/Export from the dropdown menu.

On the Import/Export page, choose the Standard Export tab.

In the Export From menu, select Options.

Using the checkboxes, choose all the columns you'll need to export in order to identify which Option IDs correspond with which options (at minimum, you will likely need the fields for ID and OptionsDesc).

In the File Format menu, make sure CSV - Comma Delimited Text File is selected and click Export.

Click the Download button on the export popup to save your file. You can open it with Excel, Google Sheets or the spreadsheet program of your choice.

⚠️ Keep the file open on your computer. You’ll need to have it on hand to retrieve the option ID numbers for the next steps.

Step 2: Export Your Products table

To get the column headers and product information for the products you are adding options to, you’ll need to export your products table. This will create child products and the Inventory Control Grid.

On your store's Admin Dashboard page choose Inventory > Import/Export from the dropdown menu.

On the Import/Export page, choose the Standard Export tab.

In the Export From menu, select Products

⚠️ If you are adding options to existing products in your database, you only need to export the columns for ProductCode, OptionIDs and EnableOptions_InventoryControl.

If you are adding new products to your database, you should export all the relevant columns. If you import new products to your database without a minimum of the three required columns (ProductCode, ProductPrice and ProductWeight), you will see a warning message about those products in the Settings > Maintenance page of your Admin Area.

In the File Format menu, make sure CSV - Comma Delimited Text File is selected and click Export.

Click the Download button on the export popup to save your file. You can open it with Excel, Google Sheets or the spreadsheet program of your choice.

Step 3: Import Product Options Information

Use the Options CSV file that you exported in Step 1 to retrieve the relevant option ID numbers that you would like to apply to each product.

In the OptionIDs column of the Products CSV file, fill in the option ID numbers for each product. Each ID number should be separated by a comma (no spaces).

For each product that you add OptionIDs to, put a capital letter "Y" in the column for EnableOptions_InventoryControl.

⚠️ Do not put a "Y" in the EnableOptions_InventoryControl column for any products that do not have options. This may cause an error with the maintenance tool, which creates all Inventory Control Grids.

Fill in any other fields you would like to import. Be sure that:
- ProductCode is the first column in the file
- There are no blank / unpopulated columns in the file
- The last column is a fully populated column

Save the file as a CSV document.

Return to Inventory > Import/Export and click the Standard Import tab.

In the Import To menu, select Products.

Browse for the file you just saved, select Upload new data and replace any existing data already in my database.

Click the Import button to add your new product options.

Step 4: Generate Inventory Control Grids to Create Child Products

Keep in mind that importing the options will not create child products by default. Once you've imported all of the relevant information, you'll need to take one last step:

From your store's Admin Dashboard page choose Settings > Maintenance from the top menu.

On the Maintenance page, click Reassign Inventory Control Grid.

On the Reassign Inventory Control Grid page, select the Create All Inventory Control Grids checkbox.

Click the Perform Maintenance Now button.

Now, when you go to the product editing page for the original product codes, you'll see a list of child products in the Inventory Control Grids section.

Summary

Building your inventory of child products doesn’t have to be a laborious process. With our bulk import feature, you can get them in your inventory and on your storefront.
