Picture this: A customer visits your site; spots a shiny, new product 🕹️; and is at the check out faster than you can say, “charge it!”
But wait. What’s this? There’s some crazy symbols and gibberish in the text that doesn’t make sense.
The customer scratches his head. 😕 All of a sudden he starts questioning your site’s legitimacy and trustworthiness. And next thing you know, your customer is gone faster than you can say, “lost sale.”
If you’ve had issues with certain characters — like "curly" quotes, currency symbols and other non-standard characters not displaying correctly on your storefront — you may be using the wrong character set.
This can lead to a bunch of mumbo-jumbo appearing in its place, and nobody wants that! Here’s how to make sure your store uses the right character set:
- Go to Settings > Config Variables.
- Click Search, enter "character" in the Name field, and click Search.
- The Character Set variable should have a value of "UTF-8". If not, change it to this value.
- Click Save.
This should fix any characters that are being displayed incorrectly due to encoding or rendering.
If you continue to have problems, you may need to export the tables to a spreadsheet or text editing program, like Excel, and use Find and Replace to fix any remaining incorrect characters.
