Hey everyone, this is Jen with Volusion. Last time, we showed you how to add informational pages to your site so customers can get a stronger sense of what your company is all about. Today is the day we open for business. But before we can do that, we need to test the store to make sure we haven’t overlooked anything. Let's get started.

First, let’s test all the major links and take a look at the main pages. Go through your nav menus, your header, your footer, and any promotional links you might have placed on your homepage: anywhere you expect a lot of your visitors to click. You may find that you forgot to add one of your top products to all the categories it belongs in, or the layout of one of your informational pages may be off. If you find something wrong, just log in to your Admin Area and fix it up.

Next, you can add an SSL authentication seal to your site if you like. This can help reassure shoppers about your site’s security. The actual certificate won’t be working yet because an SSL only applies to the domain name it’s issued for, and you’re still on one of our temporary addresses. But you can check the functionality and accuracy of the seal before you go live. Log in to your Admin Area, go to Marketing > Nav Menu Promotions, and click ID number 29 or 30: whichever you prefer. Here, just clear the Hidden check box and save.

When I click the seal, a dialog box shows the domain name and company information. These details are the same ones you gave us when you bought the SSL. If they’ve changed since then, or if you didn’t enter the right info for your business, just send a ticket to our Billing team from your MyVolusion account, and we’ll update it for you.

If it says "www.YourDomain.com is not a valid identity," then there’s a minor technical issue that our Support team can fix for you, or you never purchased an SSL in the first place. See episode six for purchasing details.

Now let’s test the checkout. You’ll want to contact your credit card processor for recommended testing practices. Since we’re using Volusion Merchant Services on our store, we’ll be testing with a real credit card and creating a real transaction. I recommend creating a one cent product. That way, you’re not tying up any more of your money than necessary, and if you make a mistake and have to try again, you won’t be hit with any higher-than-expected processing fees.

So go to Inventory > Products, create the product normally, but give it a price of one cent. Once you’re finished, click View Live to view it on your storefront, add it to your cart, then go to the shopping cart page and review the options available. If everything looks good, proceed to the checkout page and submit your information as if you were a customer. Be sure the right payment and shipping methods show up. Then make your choices, enter your payment details, and submit the order.

You’ll see a confirmation message, and you should receive two identical-looking emails shortly afterward. One of them is the email you’ll receive as the merchant, letting you know a customer has placed an order that needs attention. The other is the email sent to the customer: in this case, also you. If you didn’t receive both emails, your address might not be on the distribution list for order confirmations.

To find out if it is, return to your Admin Area, go to Settings > Company, and click More under the Email field. Take note of the Send Order Notifications To and CC Orders To fields. You can use these fields to set up two different recipients for all admin order notifications.

Now go to Orders > Process Orders. If you haven’t placed any other test orders, you’ll land right on the details page of the order you just placed. Otherwise you’ll see a list of orders, and you can access the one you placed by clicking its ID number. The status should say Processing, unless there was an issue with the credit card during testing.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your gateway recorded the transaction, too. Your gateway provider may have given you a customer account where you can log in to verify, or you may be able to contact their support team. If you’ve got Volusion Credit Card Processing, just write to vmc@volusion.com and we’ll help you out. Once you’ve confirmed that the payment went through, it’s best to cancel it. In the Payment Log section, select Void from the Capture menu. We’ll cover the rest of the Orders page in our next episode.

For now, everything seems to be ready, so let’s switch our site to its domain name. If you followed the steps we provided in episode three, this will only take a few seconds. Go to Settings > Company and locate the Domain Name menu. Right now you’re on your Temporary Hostname, which is an address with the word "servertrust" in it. Select your domain name and save. And there you go! The site’s live and ready for business.

I don’t know about you, but I think this is cause for celebration! You’ll want to announce your store opening in as many ways as possible: definitely through all your social media accounts, but also in search engine ads and newspapers.
