By default, most Volusion themes come with one or more Contact Us or Contact links in the website footer:

Your theme may or may not have a separate contact link in the header as well.

These links are programmed to open a new email message in the default mail client on the visitor's device, addressed to the inbox specified in the Email field at Settings > Company in your Admin Area. You can edit this value freely, but note that it serves multiple functions in your store.

You can access your theme code to make the following changes:

  • edit the link text
  • edit the default subject of the email
  • edit the email address (without disturbing your general store email settings)
  • edit the title tag that appears when visitors point to the link text
  • delete the link entirely

Warning

Before you edit your theme code in any way, we strongly recommend that you make a local copy in a simple text editor (such as Notepad) so that you can revert to the previous state in the event that you make a mistake. Please be aware that editing your theme code can easily damage the appearance and / or functionality of your storefront, and any customization you made between initial installation of the theme and corruption of the code will be lost unless you manually made a local copy.

Procedure

To begin editing your code:

  1. Log in to your Admin Area.
  2. Go to Design > File Editor.
  3. Locate the Shortcuts menu on the right.
  4. Click the hyperlink below the Theme Files heading (it will be formatted as "template_XX.html", where XX = the ID number or name of your theme) to load your theme code in the editor window.
  5. Locate the appropriate section of the code (for example: <!-- ==================== FOOTER ==================== -->)
  6. Within this section, locate the line of code corresponding to the contact link. You might find it easiest to use your browser's search function to locate the link text (for example, Contact Us).

The relevant line of code should look like this:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

Specific Changes

To make specific changes to your code, follow the relevant instructions below, and click Save when finished.

How to Change the Link Text

To change the storefront link text that your customers click to contact you, edit the text not enclosed within caret marks. In this example:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

How to Change the Default Subject of the Email

To change the default subject of the email, edit the text following the "?subject=" portion. In this example:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

How to Change the Email Address

To change the email address that customers use to contact you when they click the link, edit the text following the "mailto:" portion. In this example:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

Note that the highlighted portion of the code above is a dynamic variable that refers to the Email value at Settings > Company. You can substitute this variable for an actual static email address, such as "support@yourvolusiondomain.com", without disturbing the aforementioned setting.

How to Change the Title Tag

To change the title tag that appears when visitors point to the link, edit the text enclosed in quotation marks following the "title=" portion. In this example:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

Note that the highlighted portion of the code above is a dynamic variable that refers to the Company Name value at Settings > Company. You can substitute this variable for any static text of your choice, such as "Your Company Name", without disturbing the aforementioned setting.

How to Remove the Link

If you think you may want to restore the link in the future — or use it as an example when creating other links — the safest method of removal is to "comment out" the code. By adding a few specific characters near the section of code you want to remove, you can effectively hide that element from the storefront while retaining the code in your theme for future use.

To comment out (hide) a line of HTML code, add the following characters at the beginning of the section you want to hide:

<!--

Then add a second set of characters at the end of the section you want to hide:

-->

Using the link example from earlier in this article, the code will look like this when commented out:

<!--
<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>
-->

If you know you won't need to restore the link in the future, you can remove it from your theme altogether by deleting the entire line of code:

<li><a href="mailto:Config_EmailAddress_From?subject=Contact Us" title="Contact Config_CompanyNameLegal">Contact Us</a></li>

Other Footer Links

Your theme's footer may contain several other links or even social media icons, most of which you can modify. For more information, see our article on updating footer links.
